Smithing skill +10 (warning, lots of photos)

Post  runestyr on Mon Jan 09, 2012 1:31 am

I didn't play Skyrim this weekend, as I was working on my RL smithing skill. I needed a new belt, so I made one in the Norse Borre style, which was prevalent around 800-900 AD. It's a lot more work than banging on an anvil like in the game. I took the photos with my phone, so they're not perfect, but you can get the general workflow.

Sculpting the parts:

Packing the mold with sand:

Removing excess sand:

After adding the original piece (the pics of that didn't come out Sad ), packing the other side of the mold:

Finished mold for the buckle parts:

Oh wait, need to remove dross from the metal:

Ready to pour:

Cast piece coming out of the mold:

All buckle parts removed from sprue and ready for cleaning:

Filing off all the bits we don't want to keep. Getting the buckle parts to fit together is the hardest, so do it first:

Filing and polishing done:

Forming (i.e. bending/reshaping) the buckle hinge to hold the 2 parts together:

Assembling the belt separators with a similar technique:

Cutting leather straps (I have a strap cutter which would make this easier, but couldn't find it):

Joining the leather parts and metal parts via the cast-in rivets:

Finished belt (sorry the picture is so blurry):

Later, I'll cast some more of those hexagonal shapes as purely decorative mounts and add them along the length of the belt. Plus I have to make a matching pouch to carry my stuff around. So I'll have a chance to take some better photos.

I'm a medieval reenactor, getting back into it after some years away. Other stuff I have done:

Learning to do this stuff taught me things that help with modding -- mostly, to know what you want to finish with before you start, or you won't know when you're done.

No swords or knives. Iron and steel working is a totally different skill set; my brother makes knives.

I did make some tools to use for carving bone and antler, but when it comes to working iron or steel, most tools are beginner level work.
